Ruth Stephenson

Ruth Stephenson is a Mount Gambier-based visual artist whose eclectic practice blends drawing, painting, textiles, and weaving. With over 30 years’ experience in art education and community arts, Ruth describes herself as an “emerging artist” at 60—entering a creative renaissance as she explores new ways of expressing long-held ideas.

Rooted in a deep love of colour, texture, and story, Ruth’s work moves between realism and abstraction, often shaped by the emotional tone of the concept she’s exploring. Early influences include her grandmother’s handcrafts, her grandfather’s watercolours, and a lifelong fascination with textile traditions, upcycling, and natural materials.

Her current practice is grounded in a desire to examine the human experience—both her own and that of the world around her—through thoughtful, layered, and emotionally resonant work.

Co-owner of BeArtiful Creatives, Ruth is passionate about the role of visual art in building strong, expressive communities. Her career includes decades of inspiring young people, serving on regional arts boards, and championing the belief that when the arts thrive, so do we all.
